The original mission statement of the SIGGRAPH Business Symposium in 2011 was "The Business of the Business." Since that year, the vast majority of the major visual effects houses have been acquired or taken on additional owners with a majority of the investment coming from Asia. In addition, film revenue in China and Japan is now over half that of North America. Those who have taken safe harbor in the biggest animation studios have discovered they are not immune to the challenging business climates and practices of their former industry. Even the games industry has gone through an upheveal with several major studios going out of business.

The "business of the business" is more important now than it was before. Companies are no longer run by creative or industry visionaries but rather those focused on success in a mature marketplace by running businesses by the numbers. It's not the end of the industry, it's the beginning of the industry run as a business instead of a startup. EBITDA, cloud strategies, intellectual property and, of course, tax incentives will be key points of discussion alongside industry-specific topics like creative management, production efficiency, and best practices.
